The Collect for Purity

Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts…

Create in me a clean heart

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Book of Common Prayer, 355

More than one person commented on how this prayer needed to be included in the Lenten Prayers. Not surprisingly, each person found a different phrase of the prayer to be the one which “spoke” to them. Walter Brueggemann begins his book, Prayers for a Privileged People, with a meditation on this “Collect for Purity.” It has helped me see this prayer in a brighter light. ~Fr. Dan
