Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.
The Book of Common Prayer, 99
For those who pray Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer this is a familiar Collect used on Fridays throughout the year. This prayer is heard/prayed by many on Palm Sunday and also on Monday in Holy Week. That we should pray to find pain and “death” (“the way of the cross”) to be the way of life and peace indicates how fully we embrace life—all of life. God never promised a life without pain, sorrow, and many “little deaths” before death itself; but in Jesus Christ we have the hope and promise of eternal life and peace. ~Fr. Dan
