Solemn Pentecost Blessing

Be rich in God’s blessing

Clouds and Acts 2:17

May Almighty God, who enlightened the minds of the disciples by pouring out upon them the Holy Spirit, make you rich with his blessing, that you may abound more and more in that Spirit for ever. Amen.

May God, who sent the Holy Spirit as a flame of fire that rested upon the heads of the disciples, burn out all evil from your hearts, and make them shine with the pure light of his presence. Amen.

May God, who by the Holy Spirit caused those of many tongues to proclaim Jesus as Lord, strengthen your faith and send you out to bear witness to him in word and deed. Amen.

And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen.

May God …

An Easter Blessing for you in the Great Fifty Days

The butterfly: symbol of the resurrection.

May God, who is present in sunrise and nightfall,
and in the crossing of the sea,
guide our feet as we go.

May God who is with us when we sit
and when we stand,
encompass us with love
and lead us by the hand.

May God who knows our paths,
and the places where we rest,
be with us in our waiting,
be our good news for sharing
and lead us in the way that is everlasting.
Amen.

A “Franciscan Blessing”

A Palm Sunday Watercolor

May God bless you
with discomfort at easy answers,
half truths, and superficial relationships
so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you
with anger at injustice, oppression,
and exploitation of people
and all creation
so that you may work for justice, freedom, healing and peace.

May God bless you
with tears to shed for those who suffer pain,
rejection, hunger, and war,
so that you may reach out your hands
to comfort them and turn their pain into joy.

May God bless you
with enough foolishness
to believe that you can make a difference in this world,
and do what others claim cannot be done. Amen.

The Sundays in Lent are not counted in the 40 days of Lent. On the Sundays in Lent we will share words of blessing. As Holy Week begins on the Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday, I offer this “Franciscan Blessing.”

I do not know the original source of the Franciscan Blessing. I have seen this blessing in several different (almost-the-same) forms. As one Franciscan author puts it: “I do not know the origin of this ‘Franciscan’ blessing but, … it is a good counterbalance to the cosy ‘Francis of the birdbath’ spirituality!”
