Shine upon all who are in darkness

A prayer of expectation from a child-like faith.

Darkness and light in the wilderness

Lord Christ, shine upon all who are in the darkness of suffering and grief, that in your light, they may receive hope and courage and in your presence, may find their rest and peace, for your love’s sake.

Alan Warren in Christopher Herbert, Pocket Prayers for Children, (Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd, Kindle Edition).

Even in the “darkness of suffering and grief” the Risen One is present. Light will overcome the darkness. Hope is possible. Courage can be summoned to defeat fear and sadness. Rest and peace will return in the presence of the Risen One. A child-like faith is the entrance to such a prayer and such a hope. ~Fr. Dan

Grace to accept suffering

Interrogation by prayer. How confident are you?

Cross of nails and the Bible

Collect for Wednesday in Holy Week

Lord God, whose blessed Son our Savior gave his body to be whipped and his face to be spit upon: Give us grace to accept joyfully the sufferings of the present time, confident of the glory that shall be revealed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Book of Common Prayer, 220

This Collect interrogates me: just how confident am I about “the glory that shall be revealed”? Am I confident enough to “accept joyfully the sufferings of the present time”? Day by day speaks the answer. May we all accept and use the graces given in to us to bring others to know the love we have experienced. ~Fr. Dan

A prayer for one in pain

A prayer to Jesus, the Pain-bearer who holds me in eternal life

One who experiences pain

In the remaining Fridays of Lent 2017 let us be mindful of those who experience acute or chronic pain. If you experience either acute or chronic pain, this prayer may be for you. ~Fr. Dan

Lord Jesus Christ, by your patience in suffering you hallowed earthly pain and gave us the example of obedience to your Father’s will: Be near me in my time of weakness and pain; sustain me by your grace, that my strength and courage may not fail; heal me according to you will; and help me always to believe that what happens to me here is of little account if you hold me in eternal life, my Lord and my God. Amen.
